SESL Australia
Curvy lines of a ploughed field

Soil Quality is a collaboration between the Grains Research & Development Corporation, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the University of WA, the WA Department of Agriculture and Food and others. Its aims are “to identify and highlight the nature and extent of soil biological, chemical and physical constraints to production systems” and to “provide the basis of an ongoing soil quality monitoring and education program”.

It has released a long list of fact sheets in the areas of Biological Indicators, Chemical Indicators and Physical Indicators. These are available for downloading from the Soil Quality Fact Sheets page. Among the many titles of likely interest to SESL Australia’s clients are:

  • How Much Carbon Can Soil Store
  • Total Organic Carbon
  • Microbial Biomass
  • Benefits of Retaining Stubble
  • Biochar for Agronomic Improvement
  • Organic Carbon Pools
  • Optimising Soil Nutrition
  • Cation Exchange Capacity
  • Water Repellency
  • Soil Acidity
  • Phosphorus Nutrition
  • Soil Texture – Measuring in the Field
  • Bulk Density – Measurement
  • Water Availability
  • Subsurface Compaction
  • Controlled Traffic for Reduced Soil Compaction
  • Soil Sampling for Soil Quality

It also has several calculators for use:

  • Green Manure Calculator
  • Wheat Yield Potential Calculator
  • Retaining Stubble Calculator
  • Organic Matter Biomass Calculator
  • Biochar Calculator
  • Lime Comparison Calculator
  • Lime Benefit Calculator
  • Controlled Traffic Calculator
  • Gravel and Bulk Density
  • Deep Cultivation for Non-Wetting Soils
